How-To Put the Cool in Culotte

forever21-contemporary-twill-culottes-style-outfit.jpgforever21-contemporarytwill-culottes-style-outfitCulottes are one of the most feared pants to wear in the industry. Why? Well, many think that the skirt/short hybrid is unflattering and awkward, but actually culottes are quite cool.

The unintended fashion trend was created during the Victorian era when they split skirts into pants to make horseback riding easier.

Now in Spring 2016, the culotte trend is back as a chic-cool look that can be styled in multiple ways. Their versatility allows for culottes to be worn on date nights, to work or causally. If you’re wearing your culottes for an evening look, choose a dressier fabric like silk or twill. Or go sporty and rock your culottes with a pair of sneakers.

NOTE: Culottes are tricky, but I promise anyone can pull off as long as they keep in mind proportions.

Culottes are typically clinched at the waist and billow out hitting just below the knee adding volume to the bottom half of your silhouette. To avoid drowning in all the fabric you should keep the upper half of your silhouette more fitted. You can do this by wearing crop tops, basic tees (tucked in) or even a bodysuit.

Also, if you’re short like me, culottes can to make us look even smaller. You can fix this by adding a fun wedge or ankle strap heels to your look to give you length. Creating balance in your silhouette is key in helping you look taller and/or slimmer.

My culottes from Forever21 are woven in twill fabric with metallic rectangle accents above each slanted front pocket. Magic happens when you pair these wide legged beauties with Forever21’s high neck crochet top and Nature Breeze’s fringe wedge sandals. Then, finish off your look with tassel drop earrings or a faux marble cuff.
